Van eerste klim tot luchtacrobatiek – Francesca Maria Frittella, lid van Circus Tijdgeest
Geboren in Termoli, een kustplaats in Zuid-Italië, en na omzwervingen door China, Taiwan en Nieuw-Zeeland uiteindelijk in Enschede beland: het pad van Francesca is allesbehalve rechtlijnig. Sinds 2022 werkt ze als onderwijsadviseur aan de Universiteit Twente. Leren en lesgeven lopen als een rode draad door haar leven — ook in haar vrije tijd, waarin ze zich inzet als vrijwillig docent aerial silks.
Wat begon als een toevallige ontmoeting tijdens een stedentrip, groeide al snel uit tot een grote passie. In een klimhal zag ze voor het eerst een aerial swing. Nieuwsgierig schreef ze zich in voor een proefles. “Het was liefde op het eerste moment, ondanks alle valpartijen,” vertelt ze. Aerial silks bleek alles te bieden wat ze zocht: een combinatie van kracht, flexibiliteit, creativiteit en doorzettingsvermogen. “Het is moeilijk, maar juist daardoor leer je dat je met discipline en de juiste omgeving alles kunt bereiken.”
De groep waarmee ze traint, bestaat sinds 2022. Toen de eigenaar van de oorspronkelijke organisatie vertrok uit Nederland, namen enkele leden het initiatief over. Sinds januari 2026 zijn ze aangesloten bij Circus Tijdgeest. Binnen deze nieuwe organisatie bieden ze lessen aan op verschillende niveaus, van beginner tot gevorderd, in aerial silks, rope en hoop. Daarnaast zijn er wekelijkse open trainingen, waarin ruimte is om vrij te oefenen en te experimenteren.
Maar het belangrijkste blijft volgens haar de gemeenschap. “We zijn een groep mensen die samen willen leren en elkaar ondersteunen. De sfeer is open en vriendelijk, nooit competitief.” Die gezamenlijke aanpak zie je ook terug in de optredens. Elk jaar organiseren ze een eindvoorstelling met een thema waarbij alles samenkomt: van muziek en verhaallijn tot choreografie. “Het proces om dat samen op te bouwen is minstens zo waardevol als het optreden zelf.”
Voor iemand die voorheen vooral individuele sporten deed, zoals klimmen, wandelen en hardlopen, betekende de groep een nieuwe ervaring. “Ik ontdekte hoe motiverend het is om samen te trainen.” Ook het podium was nieuw terrein. “Als kind haakte ik af vóór optredens, omdat ik te verlegen was. Nu heb ik ontdekt dat ik het juist heel leuk vind.”
De toekomst brengt nieuwe wensen met zich mee. Zo hoopt de groep op een vaste trainingslocatie, in plaats van het huren van gymzalen. Ook staan ze open voor nieuwe leden die willen meedoen, zowel op sportief als organisatorisch vlak.
Tijdens de WAK laten ze hun passie zien aan een breder publiek. Ze verzorgen demonstraties bij Kunst in het Volkspark op zondag 14 juni. Bezoekers krijgen daar een inkijkje in de wereld van aerial dance. Nieuwsgierig? Kom langs en laat je verrassen door wat er allemaal mogelijk is in de lucht!
From First Climb to Aerial Acrobatics – Francesca Maria Frittella, Member of Circus Tijdgeest
Born in Termoli, a coastal town in Southern Italy, and eventually landing in Enschede after journeys through China, Taiwan, and New Zealand: Francesca’s path is anything but linear. Since 2022, she has worked as an educational advisor at the University of Twente. Learning and teaching are the common threads throughout her life — including her free time, which she spends volunteering as an aerial silks instructor.
What began as a chance encounter during a city trip quickly grew into a major passion. In a climbing gym, she saw an aerial swing for the first time. Curious, she signed up for a trial lesson. “It was love at first sight, despite all the falls,” she says. Aerial silks proved to offer everything she was looking for: a combination of strength, flexibility, creativity, and perseverance. “It’s difficult, but that’s exactly why you learn that you can achieve anything with discipline and the right environment.”
The group she trains with has existed since 2022. When the owner of the original organization left the Netherlands, several members took over the initiative. Since January 2026, they have been affiliated with Circus Tijdgeest. Within this new organization, they offer classes at various levels—from beginner to advanced—in aerial silks, rope, and hoop. Additionally, there are weekly open training sessions, providing space for free practice and experimentation.
But according to her, the most important aspect remains the community. “We are a group of people who want to learn together and support one another. The atmosphere is open and friendly, never competitive.” That collaborative approach is also reflected in their performances. Every year, they organize a final show based on a theme where everything comes together: from music and storyline to choreography. “The process of building that together is at least as valuable as the performance itself.”
For someone who previously focused on individual sports like climbing, hiking, and running, the group was a new experience. “I discovered how motivating it is to train together.” The stage was also new territory. “As a child, I used to drop out before performances because I was too shy. Now, I’ve discovered that I actually really enjoy it.”
The future brings new ambitions. The group hopes to find a permanent training location instead of renting gymnasiums. They are also open to new members who want to join, both on a sporting and organizational level.
During the WAK (Week of Amateur Arts), they will showcase their passion to a wider audience. They will be giving demonstrations at Kunst in het Volkspark on Sunday, June 14. Visitors will get a glimpse into the world of aerial dance.
